And I suppose it's been one too many, for it looks as though I have abandoned my blog, and I feel as though I've abandoned my jewelry design streak. Thankfully, the christmas holidays are only a week away bringing my styling work on productions down to a halt, thus giving me some time to refocus my energy on being creative with my other love in life - garage gypsy. Thankfully my pliers and materials have been sitting here waiting for me..right where I left them. Now before I get started on my Spring Collection for 2012 I wanted to drop in and say hello - as if I know you'll be reading this :) - and leave you with a poem I recently found.

I LOVE perusing through cute boutiques just so I can stumble upon a few clever ideas to uplift my own wardrobe. Not only do I consider this research :) but it tends to reignite my flame sending me back to work!! A couple of my friends and I have made pacts with ourselves to avoid purchasing new clothing pieces for our closet for a few months. [A] to save money, but [B] because we already own too much and we've come to the conclusion that we create a lot of what we saw strut down fall's runway with what we already have, not to mention it will challenge us to be more creative with what we've got. Here are few awesome things I came across upon the other day, that will have me pulling out my needle and thread!

I love the concept of these shoes.

How awesome is this flannel with the leather collar and shoulder patches accompanied with a single row of studs to each side?!

Leather and Cowhide platform wedge..WHUUUUT!!!

I love they replaced the sleeves with a sheer mesh (I guess you can't see it to well in this photo though). Plus I'm just a big Led Zeppelin fan.

:: SWEATER REHAB ::

I've been an avid collector of vintage old mans sweaters since 2007 when Stella McCartney incorporated OVERSIZED button down sweaters into her fall collection. As shown below :)

Anyway, it funny to see brands remaking and bring back the old man sweaters circa 1985/90s. I got some great ideas in what else I can transform a few of my sweaters into.

My favorite is this skirt. Not only would it be the easiest thing make -minus finishing off the bottom- which, would be easy if I owned a serger machine.

And then how cute are these shorts?!

I'm in love with this knit and pattern, its just so 90's!

This is the last of it, I swear!! Here's a few more silly photo's from last Thursday evening at LA Fashion Week :)) This was one of my favorite outfits that I put together, so I couldn't completely hold out on posting the photos. I don't have any footage from the show or many photos from the actual runway show because I really wouldn't be able to justify posting a display of chippendale-resembling men parading down the runway in their briefs, or one of the Real Housewifes of Somewhere (Beverly Hills, I think) and her clothing line that looked liked it just walked out of Express. No offense to those who shop at Express. It's just that there is consumer fashion and then there is fashion. Okay, I just made that up, but its true!!

This is going up a little late.. but better late than never right? Right. Okay, LA fashion week had it's ups and downs, hits and misses. Gypsy 05's Spring '12 runway collection and presentation were pretty much a hit in my book for the night. The rest..well, let's just say me and my partner in fashion crime, Vanessa, quickly skedaddled as soon as the pretentious LA scene made its presence. As far as Gypsy 05's collection goes, it didn't earn its gold star from originality, but rather from cohesiveness and ability to feed into my current desires. That being my undeniable obsession for sheer, drapy fabrics that hang loose and free from the body allowing the body's silhouette to contrast from within.

After a long, exausting but wonderful week & weekend of work, it was time to get in on some of the happenings for LA's Fashion Week. Last night I tagged along with my friend Vanessa, writer for V is for Olive and Joonbug who scored me an extra press pass and front row tickets for the both of us. I'm still reminded constantly at how small this world is after running into several people I know through the previous jewelry events I've done, and then later realizing that the one of the lines going down the runway was my friend Kunal's line, Kareena's Trends. I don't know how the world manages to pull us into the right places at the right time, but it sure has a funny way of making things happen. And I'm so incredibly thankful for it. Unfortunately my phone died after the first show, so my pictures are minimal, but its only the first night of a few more to come :)) To see the line up of events check out FASHION WEEK LA

For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week you will finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you will close that gap, and your work will be as good as your ambitions. Nothing makes me happier then laughing with friends, enjoying tasty delights, and productivity that combines fun with creativity. So the last three days come close to perfect.

SATURDAY: I spent the day making jewelry and prepping for a little sale that would take place on Sunday. That, along with the weekly apartment cleaning kept me relatively busy. It sounds relatively boring, but when you're in the zone and you've got good jams playing in the background, I rather enjoy it. And the best feeling comes at the end of the day when you see all that you've accomplished!

Look of the day.
Classic summer casual. I've been insanely drawn to the classic black and white stripe lately. It's a very classic French style, but lately I'm a bit obsessed. I don't mean to be, but I just can't help what I'm drawn to and I refuse to fight it. I just found this shirt last week and I love it, it just so happens to the fifth b&w striped item of clothing to enter my wardrobe. This may not be too bizarre for some, but I like variety in my closet, so too much of the same thing is a big red ex for me. Oh well, the style is different and I'm still loving it, so its all good.

I took a late lunch break and met up at one of my favorite lunch spots, The Food+Lab with a friend.

I decided this isn't my favorite sandwich, but it was still pretty amazing. Fried and breaded chicken in a sandwich is something I very rarely would ever indulge in now that I'm like a semi-health freak, but the lady working there swore it was the best sandwich (which I disagree), but of course I had to try it..

Then it was home and back to work..

I was sure to make quite a few of the "viewefinder" Ring that seems to be the hot commodity these days.

SUNDAY: I vended at Space15Twenty from 10 till 4pm where I met some awesome people and got to hang out with friends that were able to stop by and support the garage gypsy..

After all day in the sun, a little tuckered out I decided to have some quite time reading. I grabbed a yummy salad concoction of my own from Whole Foods and then dropped by Barnes & Noble. There I spent two hours lightly reading through a couple business books and perusing the French and British fashion magazines.

And then I spent a little time drooling over the Jeffery Campbell shoes at Nordstom. I'm really digging the Lita shoe, but I'm not sure if I'm willing to give in to the hype. Buuuut, they are pretty fun in my personal opinion and uber comfy, sooo I might need to make an exception.

MONDAY: Look of the day.
I rocked the black fedora yet again. I only toss it on when I don't feel like dealing with my insane mane. Red satin shorts, beige cotton top, leather fringe necklace and my ethnic sandals.

After hitting the gym for a good hour and a half, I cleaned up and decided to head to Starbucks, visit my friend Moni and do some work on my computa.

I got crafty last night, and made some jewelry displays for my upcoming show this weekend. Bare with me on the pics, they are a little out of order bc I realized half way through I should snap a few pics with my phone.

Supplies>>

8 foot 1.5x.75" lumber cut into (4) 2ft segments
fiberglass screening
(4) wood screws at least 1.25" long
(8) 1" nails for added stability + (4) more for additional wood beam to hang necklaces
tacks
another piece of wood 2 ft long (mine was a scrap piece I found)
Hammer & Screw gun

I was going to spray paint it but I think I like the raw, natural finish, although I may add some sort of material to the back to add contrast and depth, if I don't decide to hang it on the wall. So what do think? Not bad for about an hour of my time and 12 bucks, right :)

In between work and afternoon errands including a trip to the DMV (again!), I decided to spend my mid-afternoon on Abbot Kinney, grabbing coffee at Intelligentsia. Its a great spot for great cup of joe and hopping on the computer. Unfortunately, my throat is being a tad funny so I opted for their organic 333 tea (which is peppermint, rose and green tea) which really is quite amazing. Mental Clash.

Do you ever have moments like this? Well, it was one of those days where there are page long to-do lists floating around, constant ideas flickering around in the noggin, emails pulling you in multiple directions, and the thought of there never being enough hours in the day to accomplish it all. It's amazing to think that there are actually 16 hours in a day if you get 8 hours of sleep because it never feels that way. I'm one of those people that needs at least 7 hours of sleep to function properly - that or no sleep at all and just lots of coffee. I'm notorious for pulling those whammy days. Anyway, I hope everyone's having a fabulous week! It's been a long week for me, but a really fun one thus far. Monday and Tuesday I worked on a commercial in the costume department. I would love to have day of dress up in the costume house, I'd be playing in all of the wild colored clothing from the 60's, 70's, and 80's. And yesterday, I caught an early morning flight to my home town, just outside Chicago for my little brother's high school graduation. It's not exactly a vacation, but I guess it's nice to get away.. So let the party planning begin..

Hello friends. I decided today should be reader appreciation day :) I don't think I have yet made this clear, but YOU are the reward to the time and effort I put into having a blog. Granted, I do get some personal satisfaction of accomplishment and pride when I post, but nothing makes me happier than the comments left and shared by my peers. I want nothing more at times than to have developed a brilliant and beautiful collection of jewelry, but without you, without someone to appreciate it, it would mean nothing. This is my cause, I want to make an effect. I think that we are all capable of something great because we all possess a unique talent. I want to use mine to make the world a more aesthetically beautiful place, to inspire those around me, and those far, far away as well. Even though we're all still learning and developing, we can still make an impact.
Anyway, I just wanted to thank you for being a friend (distant or close), for reading, for sharing your thoughts, your opinions, your ideas with me and with others. You can make a difference, too, help me grow! Okay, its no New York or even San Francisco for that matter. But, none the less Los Angeles is a very happening city and a great venue of inspiration. I've had a creative couple of weeks, aside from new jewelry designs, I finally finished my ink drawing and pulled out the watercolors for few simple paintings. I have to admit I feel like I've accomplished something good when I finish a drawing or painting because those projects so often get left on the back burner.

Modern Cocktail Rings in watercolor

Sometimes I'll be folding clothes and I'll lay two things together that will spark an idea for an outfit. I never wear the same outfit combination twice. My brain just doesn't work that way, I'm only satisfied if I'm being inventive. I came up with this basic, but cute combo the other night and decided to photograph it so I'd remember to wear it.

Work and creativity are always on my mind. I wish I had a penny for every idea that popped in my head when I lay in bed at night before falling asleep. If the idea is worthy enough I just have to force myself out of bed and put pen to paper before it escapes my mind, like so many often do. Last week I had an idea for a promo video for my fall collection, and well thats I crawled out of bed to draw up.

The Ne-spiration of Stephen Sprouse

NEON. NEON. NEON. More of an artist than just a fashion designer, Stephen Sprouse was credited with pioneering the 1980s mix of "uptown sophistication in clothing with a downtown punk and pop sensibility." I loved his style before I even knew who he was, Sprouse designed clothes for Blondie's Debbie Harry (his one-time downstairs neighbor in the Bowery section of NYC) in the late 70s/early 80s, prior to becoming a commercial designer. He also worked with Duran Duran in the late 80s, designing the clothes for their 1989 tour for the album Big Thing, as well as the cover for their greatest hits album Decade: Greatest Hits. Additionally, he styled and dressed Billy Idol in the early 90s for Idol's "comeback".

Funky neon colors have made their comeback, which I have been royally embracing. Fashion is like an evolving, revolving door. Styles keep making their way around, but always in an evolved, revolutionary manner.

Happy Monday Lovelies! Did you have a nice Easter Weekend? Of course it's always nice if you can spend it with your family. Mine always gathers at my aunt's house and everyone brings a delicious homemade dish, but since I'm thousands of miles from there I decided to make it a "me" day and spend it doing things I haven't done much of in a while. It was especially nice to just take it easy, since I spent last Saturday road tripping to Coachella & Sunday recouping. I thought I'd share with you the highlights of my day along with the new additions to my wardrobe. I was in dire need of some bold stripes and fresh colored basics. Now I can play up that beloved 1968 vibe that's happening.

I got an early start on the day, and then wandered over to one of my favorite cafes, Solar De Cahuenga for a cup of rich coffee and a delicious omelet.

Omelet with sautéed spinach, mushrooms, sun-dried tomatoes, pesto, mozzarella, and avocado. I even went the extra mile and got the sweet potato fries. YUM!

Here's what I got into at Zara..

I love jumpers, they're easy and comfortable - it just sucks when you have to go to the bathroom. Typically I wouldn't wear it with the leggings, I was just being lazy.

Sleeveless top with green stripes, need it!

I loved the lace, but wasn't a fan of the neckline and the color was a little off.

STRIPES! Gimmee more stripes! I felt like Twiggy.

I couldn’t resist what Zara had to offer after seeing their lookbook. I’d prefer not to shop pieces that are one of thousands manufactured, but I just can’t help myself at Zara.

I’m always amazed at how quickly Forever 21 rips off designers. They are a copy cat manufacturer that produces bad quality clothing for cheap. I don’t mean to be rude, but I can’t help but want to throw up when I walk into Forever 21. I decided to boycott it at the end of last year because the quality is really horrible, and I don’t like junk invading in on my life, not to mention Forever 21 conveys the wrong message to consumers. It says, “buy more because it’s cheap, and who cares if it is destroyed after three go throughs in the wash, just buy another.” I say, “NOO, that is demeaning to art and fashion, not to mention incredibly wasteful. I think we should have less things in quantity, and more pieces of quality. You should truly treasure and love what is yours, meaning every garment should be that of quality and beauty. What you wear, and how you wear it says a lot about who you are. So I say, let’s not wear cheap, mass produced pieces that are merely stolen designs.” Okay, I feel strongly about that, as a designer, but I will digress. After all I just stepped on my own toes by walking out of Forever 21, bag in hand. But I promise you, I will go another 6 months before I step foot inside :)

Now for the dessert of the day. Every Easter my grandma makes these delicious "Lamb Cakes" as we call them. Which basically is homemade pound cake baked in the shape of a lamb and covered in the best homemade frosting. To bring them to life she adds jelly beans for eyes and nose, and then ties a ribbon around it's neck. They are adorable, and probably my favorite thing about Easter. Okay, so it ties with a good Easter egg hunt! I was a little jealous, so I got myself a pistachio cupcake from Crumbs Bakery. Not as good as the lamb cake, but it sure did satisfy my sweet tooth!

I'd have to say that adventure has to be one of my greatest passions in life. There is nothing more extraordinary than discovering a new place that you absolutely adore. Even though I don't always have the time and opportunity to travel outside the boundary lines of Los Angeles, I am never short of new discoveries within this cultured city. Just last weekend a friend of mine told me about this cute little bridge up in the hills, so Saturday morning we took a five minute drive up there and it instantly felt like we were in a whole different city. It was pretty amazing. Not so much that it looked a whole lot different, although the bridge was very Hansel and Gretel, it just had a very different energy. Anyway, we did a little lookbook shoot for fun and I thought I'd share my photos with you. Unfortunately, it was a really chilly morning so my outfit isn't very inspiring for spring. This is for those of you that are still experiencing those frosty days.

It can be a very lengthy, sometimes drawn out process. Design, in my opinion, is a process that shouldn't be forced. That makes it difficult because when it's your job to design and create, you sometimes need to push the ideas out. Thats when inspiration comes in handy. To keep the process organic, you need to be inspired.

Part of the purpose behind The Garage Gypsy is to share with you what happens behind the scenes, sharing with you what inspires me, and how my jewelry fuses with fashion. I must admit, I have been slacking because, turns out, its a daunting task! The truth is, it's hard to keep up with and track all that inspires, and if I decided to write about it all, I'd be living life twice and never have time to sleep. And let me tell you, sleep is a very important necessity of mine. I'm a slough without sleep. That and exercise. Nothing gets the mojo going like a good intense workout!

My "Palm Springs" Collection was very desert inspired. I imagined pieces with clean lines and a basic color palette that would pop amongst the sand. The basic elements were derived from a geometric form giving the collection a rather modern appearance. This was then fused with a very natural southwest -almost Native American color and design scheme. It was created with the concept of freedom. I wanted to give the wearer that liberating feeling of an open road where nothing is more important than having fun and just feeling beautiful inside your own skin.

And, of course, the design process at Garage Gypsy doesn't end after the jewelry is crafted. We try to put together a whole package that shares our happiness and excitement. Each piece is carefully packed in its linen pouch and natural kraft box for protection. The box is tied in vibrant colored cotton string with a pretty bow, because after all, it's a present for you and you're special :)

A new inspiration.

I just watched St. Elmo's Fire, a 1985 feature starring Rob Lowe, Emilio Estevez, Demi Moore, and Andrew McCarthy for the first time last week. Netflix directly to your television is pretty amazing. Its a great companion when working. I'm a total 80's flick girl. Most modern-day MTV/reality TV is such a bore to me. I see more artistic expression and authentic energy in older movies and television shows.

I absolutely loved Rob Lowe's style in St. Elmo's Fire. He rocked cross shaped earring in one ear, that I fell in love with. I took note. Men, you should too.

Funny thing is, last night I attended a wrap-party at The Hudson for a new Lifetime feature, where I saw a gentleman in a fabulous get-up rocking a single tusk earring. I hope to see more of this in the future!

ALEX in FLASHDANCE

I watched Flashdance for the first time when I was a Junior or Senior in high school. In short, it changed my life. Okay, not completely, but it has been an inspiration in more than one way. Upon watching Flashdance I instantly admired Jennifer Beals' character, 'Alex.' Of course, having danced for ten years myself, that was an instant common interest I shared with her character, but mostly I admired her independence and drive as a young woman. I envied the life 'Alex' created for herself; her apartment, jobs, style, and dedication to a dream. When I was seventeen, I thought- if this girl can do all this at eighteen, so can I. And, well, that's exactly what I did, only with different ambitions, in a different city.

My daily style is still influenced by the dancer. Jennifer Beals wears a slashed neck graffiti print t-shirt, ripped sweater, Lycra keep-fitters, torn jeans, cropped vests and pushed-down leggings for dance or slouch dress. Out and about in chilly Pennsylvania she chooses a heavy topcoat, over sized jumpers, several scarves worn at once, wide man-styled jackets (all with plentiful layering), leggings, skinny trousers, thick-soled boots, a red military dress coat, even a green army jacket with insignia patches.

I fell in love with Madonna and her radical style when I saw her music video for "Vogue" for the first time on 01.01.91. Yes, I even know it down to the date. I was just four, when I was watching the NBC New Years Countdown on TV with my parents. In Times Squares they were projecting the top songs/music videos of 1990 onto a large screen, in which aired on TV. Little did my parents know how much taping this hour long program would affect my style and taste in music. Not only was I introduced to Madonna, but MC Hammer, Paula Abdul, Vanilla Ice, and Billy Idol. I ended up loving them all, watching this VHS tape well until I was in high school. What can I say, I love what I love.
